Dr Roderick Deane

Roderick Deane has had an extensive career in business as Chairman and as a Director of a number of major New Zealand and Australian companies and earlier senior roles in the public sector and central banking. He has also had a substantial involvement with charitable and cultural organisations.

He is currently Chairman of Pacific Road Group in Sydney, of the New Zealand Seed Fund, a Director of Woolworths Limited in Sydney, Joint Patron with his wife Gillian of NZ's largest voluntary welfare organization, IHC Inc., and Chairman of the IHC Foundation.

Dr Deane was recently the Government appointed Lead External Reviewer for a major Value for Money Review of the New Zealand Defence Forces which was completed in July 2010 and also Chairman of an Advisory Group on the Review of Special Education, whose work was also completed in mid 2010.

Dr Deane was previously Chairman of Fletcher Building Ltd, and its predecessor Fletcher Challenge Ltd, Telecom Corporation of NZ Limited, ANZ National Bank Ltd, Te Papa Tongarewa (the Museum of New Zealand), and the City Gallery Wellington Foundation. He was also a Director of the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd in Melbourne and President of IHC NZ Inc.

In the past Dr Deane has been involved in the executive branch of Government, as Chairman of the State Services Commission, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Chief Economist of the Reserve Bank, and an Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund.

He was also Chief Executive and Managing Director of Telecom NZ Ltd, Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Corporation of NZ Ltd, Ltd, Chairman of TransPower Ltd and Chairman of PowerDesignBuild Ltd.

He has been Professor of Economics and Management at Victoria University of Wellington, a Director of TransAlta Corporation in Canada, a member of the NZ Board of AMP, Chairman of the Mayoral Business Advisory Group in Wellington, and a member of the Prime Minister's Enterprise Council.

Dr Deane is a Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Independent Studies and the NZ Association of Economists. He was the inaugural NZIER Economist of the Year in NZ, and has been CEO of the Year, Chairman of the Year, and Executive of the Decade in the NZ Management Awards. He was named a Wellington City Icon In the Wellington City Gold Awards, is a member of the NZ Business Hall of Fame, and with his wife Gillian was honoured with the Patronage Award by the Arts Foundation of NZ. He is an Honorary Member of the New Zealand Business Roundtable.

He holds a Ph D in economics, a B Com (Hons) in economics with First Class Honours, is a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, and the NZ Institute of Management. Dr Deane was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Victoria University of Wellington.
